Sales of electric vehicles continue to rise in Ireland

Content

The sales of electric vehicles in Ireland continue to rise at an impressive rate, according to the latest registration figures. This growth highlights a significant shift towards sustainable transport and a greener future for Irish motorists.

Record-Breaking Registrations in 2025

In March 2025 alone, almost 2,000 new electric vehicles were registered in Ireland. This figure is nearly double the number registered in March 2021 and more than five times the number registered in March 2019, before the pandemic. This surge in the sales of electric vehicles in Ireland demonstrates the growing confidence among consumers in EV technology.

Most Popular Electric Vehicles in Ireland

So far this year, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is the most popular electric vehicle based on registration numbers. The Volkswagen ID.4 holds second place, with the Kia EV6 ranked third. The Nissan Leaf and Tesla Model 3 also remain strong contenders in the Irish electric vehicle market.

Industry Insights and Government Support

Brian Cooke, Director General of SIMI, commented, “The Electric Vehicle market continues to grow, with the first quarter of this year seeing over 10,000 new EVs (BEV and PHEV combined) registered, almost double the amount for Q1 2021. This acceleration in the sales of electric vehicles in Ireland is due to the wider range of models now available and the SEAI Grants supporting their purchase.”

The Importance of Charging Infrastructure

The Irish Government recently published its draft Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Strategy 2022-2025. Cooke emphasised the need for a modern, agile charging network that matches the rising number of electric vehicles and ongoing improvements in charging technology.
