Volkswagen ID. Aero previews electric saloon

The Volkswagen ID. Aero is, strictly speaking, a concept car, but it will closely resemble a fully electric saloon car due to go on sale in 2023. The model will initially be available in China before a version for Europe arrives in 2024 as an effective electric alternative to its flagship Passat saloon.

Measuring under five metres will make it an alternative to the Tesla Model 3 and Polestar 2. Most notable is the distance between the front and rear wheels, as Volkswagen targets maximising interior space for passengers. The design continues the look of the ID. family, with a light bar spanning the front, connecting the LED matrix headlights. Its lower grille section closely resembles the ID.4 GTX and contributes to the excellent aerodynamic properties of the car while providing the necessary cooling for the electric powertrain.

Aero show car sits on large 22-inch wheels, which are likely to also be available as an option on the production model, though smaller 19-inch alloy wheels are earmarked to be the standard size. A gently sloping roofline includes a metallic insert which is what Volkswagen applies to the ID.5 and ID.5 models, and a panoramic glass roof will be optionally available.

Volkswagen will build the car using the same MEB platform architecture that underpins the ID.4 and ID.5. Specifically, it will own a 77kWh battery powering both single- and dual-motor versions. Thanks to the car’s slippery aerodynamics, Volkswagen is hinting that the ID. Aero could have a single-charge driving range of up to 620 kilometres.

CEO of Volkswagen Passenger Cars, Ralf Brandstätter, said: “With the ID. Aero show car, we are revealing a preview of the next member of the ID. Family. A car with an emotional and at the same time extremely aerodynamic design, a range of over 600 kilometres, an extraordinary amount of space and a premium interior.Volkswagen ID. Aero Electric Car
“With our Accelerate strategy, we are intensively driving forward the electrification of our model range. Following the ID.4, this model will be our next global car for Europe, China, and the US.”
